On April 17, I traveled with BCTV Operations Manager Greg Black to Lansing to meet with a few of our legislative representatives.
This visit was initiated by a lunch invitation to meet with other members of the Michigan Community Media Association (MICMA) who encouraged members to set appointments with our reps to discuss what PEG and franchise fees provide to our communities and the annual diminishing of those fees as customers switch from cable to streaming services.
Greg coordinated the appointments, and he shot some video along the way (edited piece coming soon!) See the bottom of this blog for the documents we spoke to and left behind.
We talked to representatives and their staff about how PEG and Franchise fees are funded by Cable operators use of the right-of-way. I presented an update to the MetroACT as a possibility to secure future funding for cable operations, roads, public safety and everything that the $150 million Michigan has historically received from these fees has paid for.
See my prior blog about updating the MetroAct and the documents below that we took with us to leave behind for further review.
The next step - finding a sponsor for a bill update and a few champions for support!
